Congratulations! You just welcomed a new member to the family! That means it is time for some adorable newborn photos. Now that you’ve booked your newborn session you might wonder what will you need to bring with you on the day.
How can such a little baby require so many things? Newborn photo shoots typically take place within the first two weeks after the baby is born when there is a lot going on. It’s easy to forget everything you may need for your session so today’s post will help prevent that! Feel free to download this checklist for an easy to read reminder of what to bring.
Nappies and wet wipes
Accidents can happen so it’s always better to be prepared, and bring more nappies than you would normally have in the changing bag. The same thing applies for wet wipes.
Clothing for the whole family
Our York newborn photography studio is usually quite warm to keep the babies comfortable even when they are naked so please wear layers. When preparing your newborns for the session in the morning, please dress them in loose clothing to avoid any imprints on their delicate skin. Although I provide outfits for the session, you might need an extra set of clothes just in case there might be any accidents. The same applies for any older children.
Keep baby calm
When posing the baby between the posing bed, props and family set ups they can become a bit fussy and using dummies is the perfect way to comfort them, so I always recommend and encourage a dummy – even if it is the only time you use a dummy. It will help make the shoot go more smoothly.
Make sure your baby is well fed prior to coming to the studio. Bring all of the necessary equipment for two feedings for a mini-session and 3-4 for a classic or full session. Sessions can take anywhere from 2-4 hours depending on the type of session you book. If your baby is awake when you arrive to the studio I may ask you to feed him or her before beginning the session. A full belly helps a newborn stay sleepy for their shoot.
Keeping the whole family comfortable
Food and snacks
Although I offer biscuits with a cuppa during our session it is always a good idea to bring your favourite snacks with you, especially if you are coming with small children. The bespoke sessions can take up to 4 hours and the little tummies might feel hungry or even hangry during this time.
If older siblings are participating in the session please bring their favourite toys, books with you. I offer free wifi in the studio so bringing a gadget to watch their beloved cartoons/programs are always welcome.
I love my vendors and carefully select my props, accessories and wraps. I will select some based on your color scheme and preferences and will have plenty on hand to choose from. If you have a special family heirloom, prop or accessory you would like incorporated into your session, please let me know in advance so that I may plan for it during the shoot and we can discuss how you would like it included.
Overall, I want your newborn session to be a relaxed, comfortable, and positive experience. If you have any questions or concerns never hesitate to reach out. Newborns are only teeny tiny for a short time and a newborn session is the perfect way to create and capture these precious memories.
